Why You Should Choose Quality over Price When You Buy Muay Thai Gloves
One of the biggest mistakes new people make when they first start training Muay Thai is buying cheap equipment the plan on replacing later.
While I understand the hesitation to spend money on equipment when you are starting out, you should borrow equipment at the gym until you are ready to commit.
When you commit to Muay Thai, your equipment is going to be something that stays with you. You want to make sure that you choose something that you can be proud of wearing every day in training.
I remember walking into my first gym over 12 years ago and spending $90 on a pair of basic gloves. Since that gym was the only one who sold gloves, and I need gloves right away, the purchase was a no brainer.
Fortunately, today we have a lot more options available.
With the growth of the internet, you can choose between dozens of different brands with the few clicks of a mouse. Now you can get a direct price comparison and see what are the best gloves out there.
One of the most common mistakes people make is buying a pair of gloves based on price. If you look for the cheapest gloves online, you can find a $30 pair of gloves that are made in China or Pakistan. While you may be able to punch with these gloves on, they will feel terrible.
When you go shopping for a new pair of running shoes, would you buy the cheapest pair on the market?
No, of course you wouldn’t.
There is no way you could force me to go into a Walmart to go shopping for running shoes. My feet are too important to buy cheap equipment that could have an impact on me over the long term.
Buying a cheap pair of running shoes can result in foot pain that affects you long after you finish running. People put a priority on quality over the price.
While this makes sense for running, people don’t understand that your hands are also important.
Boxing gloves are your most important investment in training. Wouldn’t you want to train with a pair of gloves that fits you and feels great?
The difference between a good pair of quality gloves and a low-quality pair made in Pakistan is night and day. Anytime someone is charging under $40 for a pair of gloves, and you must question the quality of the product. There is no way you can get a good pair of gloves made in Thailand for that price.
If you do a quick search on a shopping engine like Amazon, you will notice a lot of cheaply made gloves being sold. Surprisingly, these gloves tend to have a suspicious amount of reviews, many of which are fake.
The people reviewing the gloves are either paid reviews or people who have no idea about training. Anyone who is serious about training would be able to tell that these cheap gloves are garbage gloves made in Pakistan or China.
How do I know?
I receive about 2 or 3 emails every single day from suppliers in Pakistan that are trying to sell us gloves wholesale for $7.5 to $15. Being the curious mind that I am, I decided to try a few samples from these guys. I tried out samples from several suppliers and every single glove made in Pakistan or China was garbage. They are the cheap $30 gloves you see sold on Amazon.
If you are purchasing gloves for this price, the quality is absolute crap.
Besides the product being bad, I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a cheap pair of gloves in training. Not only will you look like the guy who couldn’t afford a real pair of gloves, but people will also assume you are a beginner because you don’t know the difference in quality.
Now I'm not saying you have to buy a particular brand, just don't buy the cheapest one you see on Amazon or Walmart.
Now don’t get me wrong, if you are a complete beginner, you can probably get away with a crap pair of gloves, and not even know it. This is like someone who has never tried on a good pair of running shoes, putting on an average pair of shoes.
Another point people don’t realize is that proper equipment will last longer. If you should buy two pairs of low-quality gloves for your training on a yearly basis, you can own one good pair for the same price. Choosing quality means that your gloves won’t fall apart after hard use, and the leather won’t tear as fast.
Of course, your climate and training conditions will also determine the life shelf of a glove. If you train hard and the gloves are always wet with sweat, the gloves are likely going to tear fast. You need to make sure you keep your gloves dry and in a cool place to help preserve them.
Now, if we were going to choose gloves purely based of feel, you could argue that Winning gloves are the best out there. There is a reason why all the pro Boxers use Winning gloves in training.
The problem is that not everyone can afford a $300 pair of gloves.
Fortunately, there are a lot of quality gloves that you can purchase between $60-80 that made to last. Most gloves made in Thailand will fall in this price range, and it is worth it.
Why Choose MTP Gloves
We could have bought gloves from Pakistan for $10, and charged $30 for the gloves. This would have probably increased our sales by a long shot, but the quality of our products would have been terrible. Instead of going for the lowest prices, we wanted to produce equipment from the best factory in Thailand.
We sought out a top manufacturer and partnered with them to build our stuff. While our costs are much higher, we are proud of the product that we sell. You can feel the difference in quality and comfort between our gloves and the rest.
Even if you compare our gloves to other products that are made in Thailand, I can assure you that we have the best gloves out there. Everyone who has used our Boxing gloves can attest to the quality and comfort that the gloves provide.
Having said that, other brands produce quality products in Thailand.
If you don’t know what gloves you should buy, make sure they are at least made in Thailand. Additionally, you also want to ensure they are made with real leather to ensure the quality.
While synthetic gloves look better because of the intricate designs and quality in the product, they don’t feel as good. I always recommend that you own at least one pair of authentic leather gloves. These gloves will last you years if you take good care of them and you will be happy with the results.
